Yet while this is undoubtedly true and we have been responsible for many of the major technical and environmental advances in cremator development, many people are totally unaware of the long and rich history behind the company itself.
History of our cremation system
Today Matthews is a hugely successful international organisation with roots that can be traced back to the early 1850s when John Dixon Matthews first established his engraving business in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Few people realise, however, that Mr Matthews was originally born and brought up in Sheffield, right here in England where he developed his superb engraving skills.
From the initial branding irons and stamps used to mark wooden packaging, his fledgling company quickly became known for the supreme quality of its engraving skills. This in turn led to the development of a host of other products including printing plates, stamping dies and identity products such as the military dog tags used in the first world war, before the company began to produce beautifully engraved and sculpted ‘memorialization’ products, including exquisitely detailed bronze memorial plaques.
With the growth of the cremation market the company began to produce more and more ‘memorialization’ products such as engraved urns, niches and personalised plaques, many of which were skillfully and individually crafted for leading personalities and celebrities, one of whom was Elvis Presley. His bronze memorial plaque at Graceland is sited at the most visited tourist attraction in the USA.
Eventually the decision was made for the company to develop the market and to commence the manufacture of its own range of cremators. For over 50-years we have now been setting the standards for quality, innovation and reliability. With over 35,000 installations in over 50 countries we are quite rightly regarded as world-leading cremation system manufacturers and our ranges of human cremation technology are globally recognised as the finest available.
Over the years we have been responsible for many innovative advancements in the design, manufacture and operation of cremators and not only does our range fully comply with all international standards and regulations, but frequently our pioneering work has actually helped to define those standards.
It’s little wonder that today more and more crematoria operators rely on our experience and technical know-how to help them develop their own plans.
More recently we have begun to design and manufacture animal cremation system equipment to satisfy the expanding pet cremation industry.
