Some time ago Matthews Environmental Solutions was commissioned on behalf of the British Armed Services to design and manufacture a transportable, self-contained, totally reliable and environmentally responsible incinerator unit that was suited for operational duties in remote, possibly hostile locations such as Afghanistan and Iraq.
As one of the UK’s leading incinerator designers we were selected for this challenging project to manufacture what was designated as an Integrated Battlefield Support System (IBSS) as part of a research programme to demonstrate that, in principle, waste management in remote locations can be managed in an efficient and responsible way, compliant with modern international environmental standards. The main requirement of the IBSS was to support a 500-person Temporary Deployed Accommodation camp on operations and one of its primary functions was to reduce the amount of solid waste sent to landfill.
Working closely with the MOD team responsible for the trial our incinerator designers produced a robust and reliable incinerator unit that was capable of handling up to two-tonnes per day of general waste. Our design was focused around the facility to operate at very high temperatures, but in addition we also incorporated a number of post-incineration treatments into the design that ensured both ash deposits and emissions to air met stringent environmental regulations.
As part of our design concept we also incorporated a sophisticated heat recovery facility that enabled heat generated by the incineration process to be recycled and used for heating the camp accommodation, plus water for showers, kitchen and laundries.
After extensive field tests the IBSS project was declared a success and since then we have designed and manufactured a significant number of IBSS waste incinerators, including modified designs to meet the changing and ever more challenging demands of modern military operations around the world.
