Avoiding the pitfalls of working from home

Here is some useful advice from the world’s leading incinerator systems specialist

At Matthews Environmental Solutions (MES) one of our absolute priorities is the safety and wellbeing of our employees. This is now even more pressing during this unprecedented global crisis and we want to ensure that every member of our staff is protected as well as possible against the risk of Covid-19 infection. That means we have asked most of our staff, where possible, to work from home as suggested by the government and health officials. However, this is an entirely new and challenging experience for many members of staff, especially as it appears that the need for social distancing and working from home could remain in place for many weeks; if not months. We are all now having to adjust to what is a totally new way of working and at MES we’ve been giving that subject a great deal of thought. So here is our advice to you if you too now find yourself needing to work from home.

  1. Get ready for work.

Because you’re at home and alone, the temptation may be to spend the day in your PJs or a tracksuit. After all, who’s going to see you? But we believe, however, that this is not right and we suggest that if you’re going to work, even at home, then you should dress appropriately. You’ll feel better and you’ll perform better. Get dressed for work. Make the effort. Be smart. Be ready and prepared for another working day and treat each day like it’s a real job. Because after all, that’s what it is!

  1. Create a good working environment.

The chances are you won’t have a home office. If you do have that’s great, but if you haven’t then try to create a designated space that is exclusively reserved for working. You’ll feel better and you’ll work better. Set up your equipment, use an upright chair and don’t slouch on the couch. Do everything you can to make it feel as though you are at work. Maintaining a good working environment and work ethic will improve your productivity and increase your comfort. Also, by preparing the right ergonomics it will help you to feel comfortable, stay focused and you’ll work more efficiently.

  1. Set yourself targets.

As one of the world’s top incinerator systems manufacturers, we as a company are constantly striving for continuous improvement, which means putting in the effort every single day. You should have the same attitude when you’re working from home. Be disciplined and diligent. Set yourself daily personal goals and do your best to achieve them every day.

  1. Keep in touch with colleagues.

When you’re in the office you constantly communicate with your colleagues, so why be different just because you’re working from home?  Arrange video calls to discuss jobs or solve problems face-to-face. Or simply make time to keep in touch and have a chat. Speak to your boss or team leader. Most of all don’t shut yourself off. You’re still working for the company … so stay part of the team. That way you won’t feel isolated or left on your own.

  1. Don’t be afraid to take a break.

No one should be afraid to break for a coffee or a stroll round the garden. It will help you to relax and you will feel refreshed and invigorated for the next part of the day. Refreshing the blood circulation with a little physical exercise, even if it is just a short walk or stretch, will enhance your energy and help to ‘reboot’ your mental capacity.

  1. Try not to be distracted.

Work is still work, even at home. So try not to succumb to the temptation of daytime TV or immerse yourself on social media. If you do a good day’s work and you can see the results you’ll enjoy a real sense of achievement and feel that you’ve made a genuine contribution to your company.  You’ll feel good about yourself. And you’ll be ready for tomorrow.

It is still only a week into ‘lockdown’ but so far at MES, we can see that although like so many other companies, we are going through very difficult times when our staff are working from home for the common good, our business will remain in safe hands and we are confident that we will retain our position as one of the world’s leading incinerator systems specialists.

Despite the difficulties, you can still contact MES very easily. You can still call us on the normal number, +44 (0)161 337 4488. You can also email us at sales@matwuk.com, or you can send us an online message using the form that can be found on our Contact page.
