Our bespoke plant will meet the island’s medical waste disposal demands for many years to come
After many months of discussions, planning, designs and proposals we are delighted to confirm that the States of Jersey Government has awarded the contract to construct the island’s new medical waste disposal plant to Matthews Environmental Solutions. As a state-of-the-art incineration and treatment facility this new installation, that will be replacing an existing aging plant, is designed to support the whole of Jersey’s medical waste disposal requirements for several decades to come.
The new plant will operate with a capacity of 200 Kg/h and is designed to comply with the EU Industrial Emissions Directive 2010/75/EC. Key to this concept is a stepped hearth profile, together with a ram loader and hydraulic power unit that will efficiently ‘push’ consecutive loads of medical waste though the chamber and onto the different levels of hearth to ensure the optimum combustion conditions. This moving and tumbling process not only maximises the efficiency of the incineration process but it also ensures the absolute minimal of residual ash.
In addition to the efficiency of the incineration process itself, the new plant has been planned to incorporate the latest and most advanced automated handling technology along with a number of innovative design developments that will substantially reduce labour requirements, improve operational efficiency, ensure the highest standards of clean air emissions and reduce the level of process by-products.
As part of these ‘total process’ specifications the new medical waste disposal plant includes a weigh scale, computerised bin tracking system and bin washing facility at the receiving station. Medical waste is then loaded into the incinerator via an automated process and is efficiently processed through the combustion chamber where the advanced control system will monitor and control the combustion process to ensure efficiency and compliance with the very latest environmental regulations.
At the end of the incineration process the specifications we have built into the plant mean that there will be an absolute minimum of residual ash. At this point the advanced design abatement plant that incorporates the very latest pollution control techniques treat the waste flue gases whilst a state of the art continuous emissions monitoring system continually monitors the relevant pollutants, logging and feeding the information back into the control system to ensure full compliance with all the relevant protective standards.
Work on the new medical waste disposal plant will be commencing immediately and it is scheduled for completion in February 2018. The plant will be fully assembled and factory tested before being dismantled, shipped, re-assembled and commissioned by the Matthews’ team on a purpose-built site that is being specially constructed for the new facility.
