Others may see waste … we see fuel!

Why waste incineration should be compared to a power station

Over recent times there has been a growing debate about the vast amounts of waste that modern living generates.  The main arguments surround firstly the sheer volume of today’s waste accumulation; and secondly the difficulties, cost and the environmental impact involved in the disposal of it.  As one of the world’s leading waste incineration specialists we can see a simple solution that not only resolves the problem of waste disposal, but at the same time can generate valuable by-products that are increasingly required by many industry sectors.

A popular concept of waste incineration is that it simply destroys waste product by burning it and in the process creates the risk of pollution from the emissions that are produced as a result of the combustion process.

That concept is totally false!

Instead of seeing a waste disposal furnace, you should instead view the incinerator as a power station.  A power station that instead of burning expensive, environmentally sensitive fossil fuels generates energy by the combustion of what is normally difficult to dispose of waste material.  This ‘alternative’ fuel could be industrial or commercial waste, consumer waste or in fact any type of waste material that may otherwise have been consigned to landfill.

Like any power station that is generating enormous quantities of heat there is an end product.  With our waste incineration plant that is burning unwanted waste material, that heat could be converted into hot water, hot air or steam.  Our waste incineration process could even be used to generate a valuable source of electricity.  All of these are by-products of the waste incineration process and could become a valuable (some would say free) resource for use within industrial processes or as a form of space heating.

The other good news is that in addition to the versatility of the heat generated by waste incineration, there is also another valuable by-product in the form of residual bottom ash (sometimes referred to as fly ash) that is left in the incinerator after the combustion process is finished.

Bottom ash has many industrial uses, amongst which are: concrete production, grout production and cement clinkers production.  It can also be used to aid the stabilization of embankments and soft soils as well as for road sub-base construction or as aggregate substitution.  Bottom ash also has many uses within the agricultural sector and for numerous other applications, including the manufacture of many everyday products.

So maybe the answer to the world’s waste problems is not to view it as waste at all, but to see it as a valuable fuel source.  Our waste incineration technology meets the most stringent environmental legislation ensuring that there is virtually zero pollution or harmful emissions.
