How Matthews solved an abattoir’s non-stop waste management issues
Coming up with a bespoke solution for specific waste management issues, whatever they might be, is all part of the everyday service provided by Matthews Environmental Solutions. But when the answer demands continuous operation: 24-hours a day, 7-days a week and with the minimum of operative involvement … then the solution required has to be very special indeed.

That was the situation that faced the company when we were approached by a leading UK abattoir who presented us with what could only be described as an extremely challenging requirement. Fortunately, thanks to Matthews’ unrivalled experience and expertise, plus the unbeatable technology and facilities available to us, we were able to provide what proved to be the perfect solution to their animal cremation waste management issues.
To accommodate the continuous productivity requirement we optimised the plant’s performance by designing and incorporating a pre-combustion facility that enabled the animal waste to be processed and stored irrespective of the status of the combustion plant itself. As part of this process the waste was crushed into 50mm cubes and transferred into a storage hopper ready for automatic feeding into the combustion chamber. All of this was without the need for any operator involvement … thus enabling the plant to be left unattended for periods of up to 12-hours at a time.
As demand dictated, the waste was then automatically transferred from the storage hopper to a pump that delivered the crushed waste at a pre-determined and continuous flow-rate into the primary combustion chamber.
We also designed this chamber as an inclined slowly revolving drum within which the waste material was incinerated. Because the drum was constantly revolving it carried the waste along the full length of the fire bed ensuring that there were no lumps or clogs and that it was effectively reduced to a fine, very high quality ash. After a resting period in the incinerator this could then be automatically discharged.
Not only did this novel solution totally satisfy all our customer’s requirements in terms of continuity and unattended operation, but it was also extremely fuel efficient – requiring up to 70% less fuel than conventional fixed hearth waste incinerators.
